Until 20 years ago, the land around Naples and in the Sarnese-Nocerino countryside in the province of Salerno was almost entirely planted with San Marzano tomatoes. That gradually changed as industrialized production of tomatoes grew. The San Marzano’s, were easily damaged by mechanical picking and grew slower and yielded less per plant making them more expensive. The delicate thin skin also meant that farmers began to hybridize the tomatoes creating a hardier strain of fruit.
Once farmers of the region realized that San Marzano tomatoes were in demand again, they began to replant with great success A whole series of factors, including the Mediterranean climate, the extremely fertile and well structured soil, the skill of the farmers in the growing area and their many years of experience, have contributed to the product's worldwide success, crowned in 1996 by recognition as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) by the European Union.
They tomatoes are now planted like vineyards and are harvested 7 or 8 times from July to September.
