These Caperberries are grown on the Island of Pantelleria off the coast of Sicily. This dry hot island is closer to the coast of Tunisia and is particularly suited to caper production. The low growing bushes cling to the rocks and outcrops all over the Island. There are several growers on the Island but Bonomo Giglio are one of the best known as they pick by hand and before curing in sea salt. The "Cucunci" are the fruit of the caper plant once the plants flower these fruits begin to grow. The production is very limited. They are unusual because they do not have a stalk. They are an elongated fruit much like a cornichon.   The flavour is a little more fruity and mild than the caper buds themselves. Once the salt is removed they can be used just like a caper. These can also be sliced or used whole .
